Bitterness has a way of settling deep into our hearts—especially when we’ve experienced injustice, betrayal, suffering, or pain that feels undeserved. And when it takes root, it doesn’t just stay quietly in the background. It can slowly drain our joy, distort our perspective, and keep us from experiencing the goodness God wants for us. Left unchecked, bitterness becomes a life-killer—squeezing the peace and freedom out of our lives from the inside out.

Heavenly Father, This new year doesn’t feel new to me. I’m still carrying pain from what I’ve lost, and I don’t feel ready for fresh starts or big plans. But tonight, I’m asking You to help me trust in Your new mercies. My circumstances may not have changed, but You are faithful. Help me wake up tomorrow and receive just enough mercy for that day. I don’t need strength for all of 2026—I just need what You have for me tomorrow. Thank You that Your faithfulness doesn’t depend on my feelings, my strength, or my ability to move forward. Thank You that even when I can’t see the purpose in my pain, You still have plans for me. Help me take one more day, one more step, trusting that Your mercies will meet me when I wake. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you’ve ever driven a car, you know the rearview mirror has a purpose—but it’s not meant to be your primary focus. It’s small for a reason. You glance back briefly, but your eyes belong on the road ahead. In the same way, God never intended for you to live your life staring at your past. When we fixate on what’s behind us—past mistakes, missed opportunities, or wounds caused by others—it can steal our peace in the present and keep us from stepping into what God has prepared for our future. The devotional reminds us that the past lives in the rearview—it can inform us, but it should not define us. We can’t change what happened, but we do get to choose what we do with it. We can lament, staying trapped in regret, guilt, shame, or anger—or we can learn, allowing God to redeem our experiences and help us move forward with wisdom and grace. The goal isn’t to pretend the past didn’t happen. The goal is to release its hold on your heart so you can press on, like Paul describes, toward the life God is calling you into. And you don’t have to do that alone. God gives help through the Holy Spirit, through wise counseling, and through trusted friends who can support you, pray with you, and remind you of truth when you feel stuck. Everything God has for you is ahead. Your destiny isn’t behind you—it’s in front of you.

While many would agree that there are no guarantees per se, there's always an outcome to a situation, regardless of whether we do something or do nothing at all. And, if we do the conditional thing (the "IF" you), then an outcome WILL occur (the "THEN" fill-in-the-blank happens). Life is full of conditionals--in math, language, and the Bible. Dear God, Learning to be still in a noisy world can feel scary and uncomfortable. When I’m tempted to fill every moment with noise and busyness, remind me that I have permission to pause, breathe, and rest in You. Quiet the fears that creep in when I slow down, and help me trust that You are in control—even when I’m not doing anything. Teach me to practice stillness in Your presence and to listen attentively for Your voice. I love You, praise You, and thank You, Jesus. Amen.

A new year often feels like a fresh start, but our relationship with God isn’t seasonal—it’s ongoing and steadfast. As uncertainty, trials, and world events compete for our attention, our hearts can easily drift into worry and anxiety. Yet Scripture promises that peace is available, even in the middle of storms. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that God keeps those who remain steadfast and trust Him in perfect peace. As the new year begins, we’re invited to fix our focus on the Lord, quiet our minds, and trust His promises. Peace isn’t the absence of hardship—it is the calm assurance that God is in control and already ahead of us.

Father, Thank You for Your grace. I don’t know where I would be without it. As I look back over this past year, I see both the choices I’m thankful for and the moments I wish I could erase. I confess the ways I’ve fallen short, and I receive Your forgiveness tonight. As I step into a new year, help me walk in confidence as the new creation You’ve made me to be. Let me release the weight of my past mistakes, knowing You have made all things new. Remind me that Your grace doesn’t run out—and that with You, I can begin again, even today. Let this year be the greatest revelation of Your grace I have ever experienced. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
