Marcus Mumford Says Bible Camp Is Where He First Met Wife Carey Mulligan

British folk singer and musician Marcus Mumford is known as the lead singer of the folk band Mumford & Sons. Known for his hit tracks "Grace," "I Will Wait," "How," "The Cave" and "Broken Crown," Mumford recently shared his faith behind the stage.

In a “SmartLess” podcast, Mumford boldly explained how a childhood Bible camp pen pal connection reignited on Facebook, truly defining his future. Before Marcus and actress Carey Mulligan were a famous couple loved by culture, they were two kids falling in love at summer camp.

At just 10 years old, Mumford met Mulligan (age 12) at a church Bible camp. When they became instant pen pals, he never believed they’d become lovers. Connecting years later as adults on Facebook, the rest of their love story became history.

Mumford told Fox News jokingly, “(Mulligan) still has the journal entry from the day we met where I – my cousin was there, who was two years older, who was age-appropriate for her," Mumford recalled. "And he got an eight-and-a-half out of 10. But I, who was definitely not underlined boyfriend material, got a nine out of 10." While the two stayed loosely in touch as kids, it wasn’t until their early twenties that they maintained contact on social media.

It was during those years that Mulligan then bought a ticket to Laura Marling's show, where Mumford & Sons was also performing. That act of hope gave Mulligan just enough courage to leave a note with Mumford’s tour manager. The note contained her email, and today, the two have been married for 14 years (April 21, 2012).

With two boys and a girl, Mulligan and Mumford are doing everything they can to make their marriage a priority. While it might be difficult in the artistry industry, both believe that protecting marriage is a choice.

Mulligan told BeliefNet, “The odds are stacked against us. Let’s make that our great work, and everything else can come from that,” he explained. “The reason I think people don’t stay married is because they don’t realize how much work it takes.”
